1.  MAVA: https://mava-foundation.org/news-call-for-proposals-keeping-nature-at-the-heart-of-post-covid-recovery/

The deadline for applications is 23 October 2020.

MAVA is seeking innovative ideas to better promote nature in the (post)-COVID-19 world that is currently being shaped. As economic and financial systems are rebooted, we are aiming for ideas for actions in a broad range of areas and sectors that can translate into tangible impacts for nature and biodiversity conservation.

This call for proposals is intended for public or private stakeholders that meet the criteria. The proposals should have an emphasis on the conservation of biological diversity and the sustainable use of its components. The geographical scope of the propositions can either be global or target more specifically one or more of the MAVA regions, namely: the Mediterranean, Coastal West Africa, Switzerland, and the EU countries.

With this call for proposals, MAVA Foundation will provide funding to successful applicants, for:

Supporting / influencing the formulation of recovery plans or other initiatives to:

  • Increase recovery spending for nature conservation (immediate recovery);
  • Ensure that nature and environmental sustainability are solidly embedded in the economic rebuild and associated future spending (beyond immediate recovery);
  • Use current stimulus spending for structural reform in economic or financial systems for more nature;
  • Ensure that the conditions attached to receiving funding from recovery plans are met and include nature.

Promoting / negotiating debt-for-nature swaps in MAVA regions.

Other ideas for greening the post-COVID recovery dynamics in line with MAVA’s mission and vision.”

Grants are expected to range from 400,000-500,000 CHF (370,000-460,000 EUR) and activities have to be implemented and measurable by July 2022.

  2.  IUCN: https://www.nationalgeographic.org/funding-opportunities/grants/what-we-fund/species-recovery/

The deadline for applications is 21 October 2020.

“In partnership with the IUCN SSC and Fondation Segré, the goal of this request for funding is to halt further biodiversity decline by implementing conservation plans for species and groups of species. We will support priorities of IUCN SSC Species Conservation Plans as well as conservation actions that are endorsed by the relevant IUCN SSC Species Specialist Group. Currently, we are not supporting biodiversity assessments or conservation planning activities.”

 Proposals should be less than $30,000; “however, applicants may request up to $50,000.” Awarded funds can be used over 1 or 2 years.

“Proposals that focus on the following themes are encouraged:

Specific and defensible priority actions to avert decline of a species or group of species; Projects that include the active involvement of early career conservationists; Projects that support conservation leaders from the countries where the species or group of species occur.

Preference will be given to proposals that include feasible plans to demonstrate change in key, quantifiable indicators of: for example, reduction in drivers of population decline (e.g. unsustainable hunting, fishing or logging); or increase in numbers, degree of protection, or connectivity of populations of the target species or group of species”
