Project coordinator / institution in charge:
Giovanni Bearzi / Tethys Research Institute
ACCOBAMS Priority number (VIEW):
2, 4, 12
Project description:
The project investigates the status, population dynamics, ecology, behaviour and interactions with fisheries of common bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus and short-beaked common dolphins Delphinus delphis in the eastern Ionian Sea (western Greece). Research is being conducted in the waters surrounding the island of Kalamos since 1991, in the Amvrakikos Gulf since 2001 and in the Gulf of Corinth since 2009. Public awareness, education and capacity building actions are important components of the project, that aims to promote dolphin conservation in areas where human impact jeopardizes the survival of dolphins and other marine megafauna.
