Research subject/title:
Assessing changes in frequency of occurrence of cetaceans along a transect in the Central Tyrrhenian sea over 15 years.

Project description:
The project is based on observations, taken all over the year, along the transect that goes for Civitavecchia (in the Rome district) to Golfo Aranci (in Sardinia). The Central Tyrrhenian Sea, for its geographical position and for its ecological characteristics is a strategic area for evaluating the occurrence of the marine mammals. The transect is approximately 118 NM long and intercepts the marine corridor that connects the Northern Pelagos Sanctuary to the Southern Mediterranean islands. Investigators operate weekly from ferries.
The project will also compare, after 15 years, the frequency of occurrence of the cetaceans along the transect. In fact this study repeats with the same methodology and with many of the same investigators a research undertaken between 1989 and 1991 (Marini et al. 1997).
From preliminary results differences in the frequency of occurrence, over the period, are already available. At present the research is not funded neither by the public nor the private sector.
