Project description:
The main objectives of this project are:
1) to reach an estimate of the population size for the sperm whales that inhabit the Greek Seas
2) to study their distribution in the Greek Seas and locate their critical habitats
3) to evaluate the degree of residency and/or migration patterns of sperm whales in the Greek Seas, and at a later point in the
Eastern Mediterranean as a whole
4) to evaluate the degree of genetic isolation of the Mediterranean sperm whales from the Atlantic ones (in collaboration with
many other Mediterranean and British scientific teams)
5) to conduct basic research on the life history, bio-acoustics, eco-physiology, behaviour (including communication) and
social structure of Mediterranean sperm whales
6) to provide the necessary scientific background that is required for the conservation of the Mediterranean sperm whales critical habitats.
