Training for cetacean necropsies
In the frame of the implementation of the “Work Programme 2011-2013” (Resolution 4.5) adopted by the last Meeting of the Contracting Parties (Monaco 2010), the Permanent Secretariat, the Bulgarian Focal Point, Mrs Tihomira Slaveykova and Expert M. Alvaro Garcia de Los Rios planned to set up a training regarding the necropsies of cetaceans for Bulgarian Veterinarians and Scientists usually involved in this task.
In fact, cetacean strandings create an important opportunity for the gathering of much needed knowledge on natural and human-induced mortality of cetacean populations, and provide an available source for precious additional information, among other things, on the biology, pathology, toxicology and population genetics of the concerned species.
This training will also serve at reinforcing capacity building and will allow a better use of the Guidelines regarding the best practices and procedures for dealing with mass mortality events due to chemical pollution, noise and pathogenic agents.
The training is currently taking place at the Institute of Fish Resources in Varna, Bulgaria and is involving 5 participants either from Ministries or from the NGO Green Balkans.
The training is taking place during 5 days: 3 days for theoritical classes and 2 days practice.
The carcasses collected by the Bulgarian Focal Point come from two Phocoena phocoena.
